April 2011

American Humane’s Every Day Is Tag Day
When: Monday, April 4, 2011
Where: The American Humane Association celebrates every day as Tag Day to encourage all pet owners to tag or microchip their companion animals. Pet care is more than providing food, water and shelter. Pet care also includes tagging your pet. Without a voice, and without a tag, he may never find his way home. The American Humane Association leads this nationwide campaign to encourage all pet owners to microchip or tag their companion animals. This annual effort helps give animals a voice to find their way home. According to a study of 1,000 animal shelters, conducted by the National Council on Pet Population Study and Policy, approximately 1 million dogs and 584,000 cats were taken in as strays. Unfortunately for both owners and animals, only 16% of the dogs and 2% of the cats were returned to their owners. These statistics are alarming. By celebrating Every Day is Tag Day, we can help combat these statistics. Every Day is Tag Day unites thousands of individuals, plus professionals in local shelters, veterinary clinics, animal care and control agencies, and other humane agencies, in the common goal of educating pet owners about the benefits of tagging their companion animals. Identification is your pet’s ticket home! For more information, please visit Every Day is Tag Day – American Humane.

An opportunity to learn additional ways of coping with the loss of an animal*. If you are interested, please call 865-755-8839 or visit University of Tennessee Vet School. *We may use the term “animal” because we respect that each of us has a unique relationship with our animal. People can consider their animals as family members, children, friends, and companions. People can also consider their animals as resources such as the farmer who stewards cattle or other live stock. People who care for animals like zoo keepers or other animal related care professionals can also become attached to the animals in their care. We respect the uniqueness of each human-animal relationship and seek to support that unique relationship in whatever way is deemed helpful.
