As the municipal shelter for both the City of Knoxville and Knox County, we take in every animal regardless of age, size, breed, health or behavior concerns. Just last week, we brought in 275 animals – the most in a single week since 2019.
While at Young-Williams, these pets receive the highest quality of care. They arrive with broken bones and broken hearts in need of medical treatment, behavior training and unconditional love. With donations from friends like you, they have a chance to find a loving family.
With the warmer weather and higher intake numbers, our shelter is reaching critical capacity. This weekend, we’re waiving our adoption fees for adult pets with a donation to the shelter in an effort to help find these animals a home, creating space in our shelter for more animals in need. Stop by either of our locations Friday, June 11 – Sunday, June 13 from 10 AM – 1 PM and 2:00 PM – 6:00 PM to visit with our adoptable pets like Katie.
113 days. Since 2019, Katie has spent 113 days at Young-Williams Animal Center. This eight-year-old pittie mix knows exactly what she wants: a family with no kids where she’s the only pet and has access to an endless supply of toys. She originally came to us as a stray and would resource guard her food and toys, a common behavior for dogs who haven’t had a constant food source. Katie spent some time with a family who had younger kids wanting to share their snacks, but she didn’t understand how to patiently wait for the goodies to come her way. Katie thought the next family would be the right match, a single woman who had more time to work on training. Just a few short months later, Katie’s new friend was moving and unable to take Katie with her.
Katie’s most recent stay at Young-Williams is going on two months. She’s become a big fan of our Doggy Day Trip program, where she’s more interested in cuddling up in a lap than going for walks. Every morning, she greets staff with a wagging tail and her favorite spikey toy in search for belly rubs. We’ve been working on giving and receiving food and toys. Katie hopes she’ll find the right family during this weekend’s adoption special and that this is her final goodbye to her friends at the shelter.

Right now, we have an urgent need for adult dog foster homes and provide all the needed supplies at no cost to the foster family.
