POSITION DESCRIPTION
TITLE: Adoption Specialist 
DEPARTMENT: Animal Welfare 
JOB SUMMARY: Responsible for the complete adoption process of the animals in our care. Assist staff and the public with handling animals, and keep the non-administrative areas of the shelter clean.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE JOB INCLUDE:

Animal Care:
  • Ensure that all animal areas are maintained in a clean, sanitary, and comfortable manner as per policy.
  • Feed and water on a daily basis, while monitoring their physical condition and the behavior of each animal
  • Report the need of veterinary intervention of sick or injured animals
  • Appropriate movement of animals throughout the adoption floor after appropriate medical and behavior evaluation.

Administrative:

  • Ensure that paperwork and records are maintained accurately and entered properly into the Petpoint data base.
  • Develop a basic working knowledge of the YWAC’s procedures, guidelines, and protocols for the safe handling of animals
  • Understanding legal and statistical reporting procedures, and veterinary protocols of YWAC
  • Knowledge of animal regulations for city, county and state.
  • Understanding and recommending spay and neuter options per YWAC protocols.
  • Understand and comprehend YWAC’s SOPs.

POSITION SPECIFICATIONS:

  • Required
    1. High school diploma or equivalent
    2. Proven ability to handle multiple tasks in a busy workplace environment
    3. Computer basics
    4. Ability to accurately perform basic mathematical calculation
    5. Understanding of humane care and treatment of animals
  • Preferred
    1. Experience in animal care
    2. Advanced computer skills
    3. Knowledge of Petpoint database

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Indoors in a high noise air-conditioned/heated building, outdoors at shelter or on-location for various activities
  • Equipment use: Includes use of PC, printer, copy machine, fax machine, telephone, and cleaning equipment and supplies
  • Work hours: Work hours will vary. Evening and weekend and holiday hours will be required

MENTAL, PHYSICAL AND COMMUNICATION DEMANDS:

  • Regular exposure to animals, cleaning chemicals, fumes, dust, animal feces, bites, scratches.
  • The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 100 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Regularly required to stand and walk.
  • Regularly required to use arms, hands and fingers to handle, and reach for objects.
  • Strong data entry skills and the ability to maintain accurate records in Petpoint.
  • Requires working alone or with minimal supervision. Must be self motivated.
  • Requires patience and tact when working with difficult, emotional, or angry people.
  • Requires clear verbal communication over the telephone and intercom systems to internal and external individuals.
  • Requires treating people and animals in a pleasant, courteous and professional manner.
